Coaching/Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on developing my students’ love of tennis and their desire to push themselves to reach their optimum performance level. As students improve, their desire to become more involved in various tennis activities increases. In helping students achieve their maximum performance level and enjoyment, I emphasize the following specific training areas: fundamental technique, advanced bio-mechanics, taticts and strategy, mental skills, stroke repetition, athleticism, match play, fitness and nutrition.

Each specific area of training involves many steps and requires time to develop the separate skills, muscular coordination and confidence for players to reach their optimum performance level. Below are more specifically defined areas of my tennis development process:

  • Solid tennis technique: Through the development of strong footwork skills, modern stroke mechanics, and advanced spins.

  • Mental skills: Emphasizing strategic point play, shot selection point patterns, emotional control and confidence on court, focusing on the competitive process instead of playing with outcome and score based emotions.  These mental skills raise players' performance levels in competition.

  • Fitness: Conditioning, nutrition, and the development of athletic skills contribute immensely to athletic performance.

  • Athleticism: Improving overall skills in the following areas: hand-eye coordination, hand and foot speed, flexibility, and anticipation allows players to compete against players with superior natural athletic ability.

Repetitive practice of specific skills and the appropriate skill building exercises allow players the chance to work through difficult stroke mechanics and other essential tennis skills. The mechanical foundation allows players to focus on their competition. Once a solid mechanical foundation is established, tennis becomes easier to master and enjoy for life.
