What is poaching?  Poaching is where one player crosses over to their partner's side of the court to intercept a ball on the partner's side.  Poaching usually occurs when their opponents are serving and the poaching partner is at the net.

  • To attack a weak return

  • To create obstacle for the receiver to contend with

  • To surprise an opponent . . . especially on the first point of the match and select points and games

  • To protect a weaker partner after their serve

  • To complement a powerful or well placed serve

  • To end a deuce/ad stalemate

  • Regular poaching allows players to use 'fake' poaching as an another obstacle for the opponent

  • To help end longer points

  • To exploit teams who stay back on the baseline
