Wrist Position on the modern forehand

There are several key elements to having a dynamic and modern forehand.  One often misunderstood concept is the wrist position on the forward portion of the forehand swing.  Note how Novack Djokovic keeps his wrist laid back as his arm and racket handle begin to move forward towards the oncomming ball.  A bent wrist creates leverage and better accuracy at impact.

Training Tips:

  • Lead the shot with the bottom "butt cap" of the racket.  The strings will naturally move forward towards the ball as you pull the racket handle forward towards the net.

  • As a warm-up/training exercise, have someone hold your racket lightly as you practice pulling the handle forward towards the net.

  • Use the fence, tennis backdrop or net to guide and delay your racket head in the wrist back position as you pull the handle along the fence or net.

  • Rotate the body forward to allow the wrist posiiton to remain laid back.  The torso should face the direction of the intended target at impact.  The forearm should be extended forward with the wrist back and strings facing the intended target.
